Erectile dysfunction (ED)

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition where a man has difficulty getting or maintaining an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.

It can be a distressing and frustrating experience; it disturbs physical and emotional and impacts relationships or affects man’s quality of life.

It’s a medical term; for that inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

  • Stress.
  • Smoking.
  • Low testosterone levels.

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease.

Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction

  1. Difficulty maintaining an erection.
  2. Erection may not last long enough to complete sexual activity.
  3. Reduced libido or sexual desire.

Diagnosis Test

  • Physical Examination – Doctor checks for physical causes, such as signs of nerve damage, or issues with blood flow.

  • Nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) tests.
  • Specialized Testing – In rare cases, such as dynamic infusion Cavernosometry or Cavernosography (DICC) tests may be performed.

Treatment for erectile dysfunction

  1. Oral Medications – Most commonly prescribed oral medications for ED include sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra). Men on an as-needed basis, about 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity.
  2. Alprostadil – Alprostadil is a medication available in both injectable and suppository form that helps relax the blood vessels of the penis, allowing for increased blood flow.
  3. Vacuum erection devices (VEDs) –
  • Vacuum erection devices (VEDs) are non-invasive devices that can help men achieve an erection.
  • A VED consists of a tube that is placed over the penis, and a pump that creates a vacuum, drawing blood into the penis to produce an erection.
  • Once an erection is achieved, a constriction ring is placed at the base of the penis to maintain it during sexual activity.
  1. Penile Implants: In severe cases of ED that do not respond to other treatments, a penile implant may be considered.
  2. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT): For men with low testosterone levels, testosterone replacement therapy can help improve erectile function. This treatment may involve injections, patches, gels, or pellets.
